It can be emotionally devastating to learn that you have Parkinson's disease, a debilitating and "incurable" disease that can slowly rob you of your ability to control your own movements. I do not know how that feels, but I can imagine that it must be frightening. Following diagnoses, many become depressed, especially as the disease progresses and the symptoms worsen. You were probably told that there is no cure, but hopefully you were also told that there are things you can do to slow the progress of the disease.
I'm here to tell you that you can STOP the progress of Parkinson's, regain control of your mobility, and take back your life! I know this because I helped my client and friend to do just that.
So how do we do this? Medical researchers have discovered that the brain is a very flexible organ that can rewire its own circuitry, when it is pushed into doing so (a concept called neuroplasticity). This is essentially how humans learn, and the more that we repeat things, the more that those nerve pathways get reinforced until it becomes second nature. The key to rehabilitation of any kind can be found by breaking the word down thusly: re (ANEW) hab (HABIT) abilitate (TO MAKE ABLE). It's all about creating new habits to make you able to do the things you want to do. It's not easy. Creating new habits takes hard work and discipline, but Zenfinity will be there to help you every step of the way. You see, we believe that no one is merely a victim of their circumstances. Life gives many of us difficult circumstances, but we're also given free-will, and it's the choices we make that ultimately determine whether we overcome our circumstances.
The Zenfinity method for Parkinson's Rehabilitation Therapy combines Tai Chi, full-body stretching, calisthenics, and what some call "Big Step" exercises, with a focus on deep breathing, posture, balance, and mindfulness. We also provide Neuromuscular Massage Therapy, to help you release old tension patterns and musculoskeletal structural imbalances, and keep your muscles loose.
You'll learn how to stretch every major muscle group in your body to loosen up contracting muscles and restore flexibility, which is one of the major keys to mobility. You'll also learn a simple, basic form of Tai Chi, called Sunrise Chi Gong, a moving meditation which takes your entire body through it's full range of motion and strengthens your legs and core muscles, while mindfully focussed on deep breathing, balance and posture. We'll also practice a variety of stepping exercises, including lunges, marching, side-stepping, cross-stepping and others, with as much assistance as needed. By pushing yourself to do more difficult steps, regular walking becomes easier and easier, while your confidence improves with your balance. With calisthenics, we increase strength, stamina, and control in the upper body, lower body and core. Strength is the second major key to mobility, and core strength is especially important for balance. All of this exercise also increases your dopamine levels, which helps to reduce your symptoms and helps you feel better. And of course, you'll burn fat, as well.
Please understand that this program is intended to complement your medicine and your relationship with your doctor. As you continue to work with your doctor to find the right dosages and combinations of medicines for you, we'll work together to help you take better care of your own health. With time, your doctor will notice your improvement, and may even decide to decrease the number and or dosages of medications, at his or her discretion. While we can drastically improve your mobility over time, so that you can live relatively symptom-free, we cannot yet eliminate the disease entirely.
